Beat the Heat: Top 5 Tips to Stay Cool on the Water This Summer

There’s no better way to enjoy a hot summer day than on the water. Whether cruising the coast, casting a line, or anchoring at your favorite sandbar, boating is the ultimate escape from the daily grind. However, even in paradise, Florida heat and humidity can be intense during peak summer months.

At Gulf Stream Boat Club, we’re all about making your time on the water comfortable, safe, and fun— even when the sun is blazing. Follow these five expert tips to stay cool on the water this summer and turn up the fun while turning down the heat!

Our Tips to Stay Cool On The Water:

1) Choose The Right Boat with Built-In Shade

Not all boats are created equal when it comes to sun protection! Luckily, our fleet has plenty of options to help you stay out of direct sunlight.

Woman in a colorful striped top pilots a boat near a sandy shoreline. Green water, trees, and a cloudy sky create a relaxed atmosphere.

Look for boats with:

  • T-Tops: Perfect for fishing and providing shaded standing room

  • Bimini Covers: Ideal for cruising and offering wide overhead shade

  • Full Canopy Coverage: Great for long cutting and family-friendly trips

Have a question about our fleet? Don’t be afraid to ask our dock staff for a recommendation.

2) Time Your Outing Wisely

One of the simplest ways to beat the heat is to avoid boating during the hottest part of the day, typically between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Morning trips offer cooler temperatures, calmer waters, and excellent fishing conditions

  • Evening trips deliver scenic sunset views and refreshing breezes

3) Make the Most of Swim Spots

When the heat rises, there’s no better way to cool down than jumping into Florida’s beautiful waters. As a Gulf Stream Boat Club member, you have access to some of the top swimming spots in the state.

Member Favorites Include:

  • Jupiter Sandbar

  • Lake Boca

  • Shell Key Preserve

  • Egmont Key

Don’t forget to pack your favorite floats and a waterproof speaker to turn any swim stop into a floating party.

4) Use Cooling Gear and Smart Sun protection

Smart packing can make a big difference in staying cool and comfortable. Equip your boat bag with these heat-beating essentials:

  • Insulated water bottles to keep your water cool all day

  • Cooling towels (just wet and snap!)

  • Portable fans or misters

  • Light-colored, UPF-rated clothing

  • Wide-brimmed hats and polarized sunglasses

And don’t forget the reef-safe sunscreen—reapply every 90 minutes!

5) Hydrate and Snack Smart

The sun can sneakily dehydrate you, even if you are surrounded by water. Staying hydrated isn’t just about drinking water; it’s also about fueling your body with the right snacks and fluids.

Assorted snacks in a clear container on a wooden table, including grapes, cheese, berries, nuts, and olives. Bright, colorful, picnic mood.

  • Electrolyte-enhanced beverages (like coconut water or sports drinks)

  • Chilled fruit like watermelon, grapes, and oranges

  • Avoid salty snacks and heavy meals that leave you feeling sluggish or thirsty

Pro Tip: Pack a cooler with frozen water bottles, which can double as ice packs and melt into cold hydration later.
