Summer is one of the best times to hit the water! However, with rising temperatures and intense sun, it is important to take extra steps to stay cool, comfortable, and safe while boating.

Whether you are cruising, fishing, or relaxing at the sandbar, here are some expert tips for boating in the summer to help you beat the heat on your next day on the water:
Dress Smart
What you wear can make a big difference in how you feel under the sun. Make sure to:
Opt for light colors and breathable fabrics to keep you cool and dry when on the water.
A wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses protect your face and eyes from the sun's harsh glare.
Consider UPF-rated sun-protective clothing and neck gaiters to help reduce sun exposure.
Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is one of the biggest risks when boating in extreme heat. Reminder to:
Drink plenty of water and keep a cooler stocked with water. Remember to drink regularly!
Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as these can dehydrate you faster. If you’re indulging, alternate with water to stay balanced.
Pack hydrating snacks like watermelon, grapes, and oranges. These snacks are refreshing and help keep you hydrated.
Create Shade on Board
Direct sunlight can make the temperatures on your boat feel much hotter than the actual temperature.
Most of the boats in the GBC fleet come equipped with shades to help provide much-needed relief from the sun.
Find natural shade from natural areas like the mangroves, or at a dockside restaurant with covered seating.
Bringing portable fans, such as battery-powered or USB fans, can help provide a cool breeze by helping circulate the air.
Cool Off In The Water
One of the best ways to stay refreshed is to take a dip!
Anchor at a sandbar with shallow and clear waters that are perfect for wading and floating! Don’t forget your floating loungers and tubes for a relaxing time.
Jump in and swim! A quick dip can instantly cool you down and lower your body temperature.
Use Sun Protection
Sunburns not only make for an uncomfortable evening, but they also increase your risk of heat exhaustion.
Remember to apply reef-safe sunscreen before heading out and to reapply every two hours! If you plan on swimming or snorkeling, be sure to use waterproof sunscreen.
Don’t forget to apply to your lips and ears! These are often forgotten about areas, but are prone to sunburns.
Time Your Trip Wisely
The time of day you head out and the weather can greatly impact your trip.
Avoid peak heat hours, such as between 12 PM - 3 PM, when the sun is the strongest. If possible, plan your outing in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures.
Use a boating app to check the weather forecast and conditions. High humidity and heat indexes can make it feel hotter than expected, so it is important to plan accordingly.
Stay Safe and Know Signs of Exhaustion
Heat-related illnesses can sneak up on you, so it’s crucial to watch for warning signs:
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Excessive sweating or clammy skin
Weakness or nausea
Headache or confusion
If you or someone on board starts showing these symptoms, move to a shaded or air-conditioned area, drink cold water, and cool down with wet towels or a swim.
