Boating in Florida is a dream come true! However, with so many kinds of boats and boaters, it is essential to understand the laws and regulations that keep you safe and compliant on the water.

Here is a beginner’s guide to Florida’s boating laws and regulations, and some other helpful tips:

Boating Education

Thanks to GBC's orientation, which provides comprehensive boating safety, Members don't need a boating license or to carry an education ID card. However, if you feel more comfortable at the helm with this under your belt, more power to you!

There are also many free boating safety courses online you can take! These are full of useful information for anyone at any level of boating, from getting more comfortable driving a boat to getting a quick refresher.

Ask one of our club managers or captains for some recommendations if you are interested in taking one!

Safety Equipment

Your GBC dockhands will give you a refresher on the locations of onboard safety equipment, such as life jackets and fire extinguishers, at every reservation!

Every GBC vessel is equipped with enough adult-sized life jackets to match the boat's maximum capacity, in compliance with Florida boating regulations. Youth and child-sized life jackets are also available on request for children—we have jackets for infants (under 30lbs), children (up to 50lbs) and youth sizes (up to 70lbs).

Each boat is also equipped with throwable flotation devices, fire extinguishers, flares, a first aid kit, and dock lines.

Plus, every dashboard has a sticker with our emergency contact line.

Understanding your boat’s safety layout ensures peace of mind for every adventure!

The Day You Boat

Before setting out on the water, thorough preparation ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Check the Conditions: Know the tides, wind forecast, weather predictions, and the exact times for sunrise and sunset. These factors impact navigation and safety.

  • Understand the Area: Research your destination. Does it have docking facilities, or will you need to anchor? Familiarize yourself with any local rules or restrictions.

  • Have a Plan: Outline your itinerary, share it with someone onshore, and know emergency contact options.

Preparation is the key to a stress-free adventure!

Safety First, Always

"Overall there is no such thing as too much preparation,” says Rob, Manager of our Palm Beach Gardens Club.

Boating in Florida becomes an unforgettable experience when done responsibly. Being prepared by knowing the laws and using safety equipment is essential.

Feel free to ask our approachable dockhands any questions you may have! Many hold a captain's license and are always eager to assist.
