Egmont Key: A Boater’s Favorite Getaway

the secluded Egmont Key at the mouth of Tampa Bay

Enjoy your own slice of solitude at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. Just a few miles offshore and minutes from Gulfstream Boat Club Tierra Verde, Egmont Key offers Florida’s west coast the perfect escape.

The secluded island at the mouth of Tampa Bay is your personal refuge to drop anchor, relax, and collect sea shells along the shore. Rich with American history and surrounded by pristine beaches, Egmont Key is the perfect family-friendly getaway. Boaters traveling to Egmont Key can enjoy swimming, fishing and exploring. You can choose to lay on the warm white sand beaches or venture along the path that was once occupied by the Union Navy.

What to pack

Given the nature of the island, Egmont Key doesn’t provide access to any stores or restrooms. We recommend packing a picnic with plenty of food and water. Before departing, you can grab extra water, ice and sun protection from Tierra Verde’s Port 32 Marina ship store. Remember to pack-out any trash when you depart and leave Egmont Key just as pristine as you found it.

Depending on how long you plan to stay, we can recommend a boat to accommodate all your passengers’ needs. Our Tierra Verde fleet ranges from family-friendly to angler-approved. Our pontoons offer plenty of shade and space for kids to roam, whereas our twin engine boats come equipped with a head and changing room.  If you’re not sure which boat to take, give us a call and we’ll help you choose the right boat for you.

Exploring Egmont Key

Snorkeling off Egmont Key is a sight to see! Venture out beyond the shores to discover everything from beautiful sea life to the ruins of gun batteries that have sunk into the sea. You’ll witness all sorts of marine life that now inhabit the old structures that once belonged to the 300 residents of Fort Dade. Don’t have a snorkel set? Grab some complimentary gear from Gulfstream Boat Club on your way out.

Designated fishing areas can be found on the east and west sides of the island. Anglers will find sea trout, tarpon, snook and grouper. With the underwater structures creating a safe haven, there’s always fish to find. When in doubt, head to Egmont Key!

When it’s time to give your sea legs a break, grab your shoes and head towards the brick paths leading to the lighthouse. On your way, keep an eye out for the gopher tortoises that seek shade in the brush. You might even be treated to the sight of hummingbirds! Since the island acts as a refuge for wildlife and nesting shorebirds, it’s best to admire their beauty from a distance.

At Egmont Key, boaters get to take in the stunning natural beauty of their own backyard. Visit on a weekday to enjoy it without the crowds. The island stretches past 6 miles long so no matter what, you can find your own slice of paradise. Reserve your  best boat out of Gulfstream Boat Club Tierra Verde today with our easy-to-use reservation app. There you can let our Member Services Team know if you need additional gear before making your way to the marina!
